Citizens Organized for Wagner's Farm

Glenview

In 1998, Wagner’s Farm in Glenview was listed as one of Landmarks Illinois’ Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois. The 20-acre parcel was one of the last working farms on Chicago’s North Shore and, with the death of the last descendant of founder John Wagner, it appeared the property would be subdivided for townhouses and luxury residences. In July 2000, largely through the efforts of Citizens Organized for Wagner’s Farm (C.O.W.S.), an advocacy group, community residents voted to approve $7.2 million for the purchase of the threatened property by the Glenview Park District. Since then, C.O.W.S. has continued to play a role in advocating for the farm’s “charming rustic quality,” including saving its farm animals and ensuring authentic restoration of its farm buildings.
