Central Park Bandshell, Orion

Project of the Year

Demolition twice in its 90-year history, first in the 1960s and again in 2001, when deferred maintenance had compromised the structure. In both instances, fundraising efforts on behalf of local residents provided the necessary resources to repair the bandshell and preserve this local jewel.

President’s Award

This outstanding Prairie-style building, commissioned by railroad magnate Samuel Insull and designed by architect Arthur U. Gerber in 1925, appeared on Landmarks Illinois’ Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois in 1995.

Award for Adaptive Use

A local brewery in downtown West Dundee, five miles north of Elgin on the Fox River, has brought new life to this historic three-story Italianate and the surrounding downtown area.

Hard Rock Hotel, Chicago

Award for Adaptive Use

This striking green and gold Art Deco tower, designed by Daniel and Hubert Burnham in 1929, originally housed the offices of the Union Carbide & Carbon company. The 75-year-old office building had difficulties competing for tenants seeking modern amenities.

Leslie H. Kenyon, Peoria

Lifetime Commitment Award

Trained as an architect at the University of Michigan, Kenyon has worked tirelessly for over forty years promoting the merits of historic preservation in both his words and actions. As principal and founder of the architectural firm Kenyon & Associates, he has completed over seventy-five preservation projects throughout his admirable career.

Menard County Board, Petersburg

Award for Public Leadership

Exterior parging and remedial patching material had to be carefully removed in the restoration of the Menard County Courthouse’s delicate red sandstone exterior. This was a difficult task that required the expertise of trained craftsmen to ensure the success of the project.

Martin Mitchell Mansion and Carriage House, Naperville

Award for Restoration

The restoration of these two historic structures was based on meticulous research compiled into a four-volume historic structures report. The mansion and carriage house were the original acquisitions for Naper Settlement, a living history museum located in a western suburb of Chicago.

Wheeler Mansion, Chicago

Award for Restoration

This stately mansion, located just south of the Prairie Avenue Historic District, was completed in 1885 and has served as a private residence for two prominent Chicago businessmen. Calvin T. Wheeler, the home’s original owner, was an early president of the Chicago Board of Trade.

Alfred W. Mueller, Galena

Award for Stewardship

What began as a childhood pastime became a lifelong pursuit for this Galena native. For over ninety years, Alfred W. Mueller has amassed a collection of historic images of the City of Galena and the surrounding area. At last count, the collection numbered in excess of 10,000 items that are available for public use thanks to Mueller.
