Statewide Endangered

2012 Ten Most Endangered Historic Places

This year’s list of threatened sites was announced on April 24 at a press conference at the State Capitol in Springfield. Now in its 18th year, this statewide list calls attention to threatened historic resources in need of assistance in the form of responsible stewardship and/or creative reuse plans. The economic downturn, public deficits and a lack of available financing continue to challenge historic sites throughout Illinois. By publicizing these sites, we hope to bolster local advocacy efforts and build momentum towards each property’s eventual preservation.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, 52 sites have been saved, 40 have been demolished or substantially altered, 70 are still threatened, and 13 have a rehab pending/underway. For a detailed list of past sites, visit the “Ten Most” Archives
