Completed in 1938 and closed as a movie house in 1978, this Art Deco theater was
rescued from decades of neglect when the City of Metropolis acquired the
property in 2007. Damage sustained under the previous ownership has left the
theater without a roof, making the original interior unsalvageable, but the
exterior remains structurally sound. Over the past three years, a city-initiated
task force has been working on reuse solutions. One option is to construct a new
theater inside the outer shell. This could meet the needs of the local school
district, which currently lacks a large assembly space. However, a serious
fundraising campaign is needed to pay for a feasibility and reuse study.
